Sevier "deadeye" wins state shooting title

A UT student from Wears Valley won the state championship medal for sharp shooting last week at Clinton, Tennessee.

Eugene Autrey, son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Autrey, won the shooting title to add to a long string of marksmanship victories. An ROTC cadet at UT, Autrey won the intramural championship his freshman year at "The Hill."

Eugene is a graduate of Sevier County High School.


Mrs. Viola Cate ­-- 85, of Route 1, Kodak, died at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at St. Mary's Hospital, Knoxville. Survivors: daughters, Mrs. Amos Pollard, Mrs. Bruce Hayes, Mrs. W. R. Hayes; sons, Virgil, Elva, Coy Cate; 26 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; brothers, Carl and Coy Mount. Funeral, 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, Oak Grove Methodist Church. Interment, church cemetery.

Mrs. Davie Shields -- 74, widow of the late Ed Shields, died at 7 a.m. Wednesday Feb. 17 at her home, Route 9, Sevierville. Survivors: son, Claude Shields, Sevierville; four daughters, Mrs. Ruth Ownby and Mrs. Kate Maples, Sevierville, Mrs. Clark Franklin, Roseville, Calif., Mrs. Jeanette Beckwith, Chicago, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; Mother-in-law, Mrs. Vin Shields, Sevierville. Funeral, 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, Rawlings chapel, Rev. Joel Carr officiating. Burial, Middle Creek Cemetery.

John Breeden, 72, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17 at his home, Rt. 3, Sevierville. Survivors: wife; sons, Otha and Roy; five daughters, Frankie Breeden, Stella Green, Pearl Christopher, Anna Jane Underwood, Maggie Ballard; 22 grandchildren; six brothers, Daniel, Lewis, Lawson, Melvin, Robert, and Dave. Funeral, 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, Atchley's chapel. Interment, Ball Cemetery.

Brian Atchley ­-- 61, died at 3 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19 at his home on Route 5, Sevierville. Survivors: wife, son, Clyde; daughters, Mrs. Winfred Thomas, Betty Jean and Carolyn Atchley; five grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Furman Chance. Funeral, 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, Atchley's Chapel, Rev. J. L. Helton officiating. Burial, Gist's Creek Cemetery.

Alfred Homer Loveday, 7-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Loveday, Rt. 9, Knoxville, died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 20. Survivors: parents; 3 brothers, Hubert, Ray, and Arlie; 4 sisters, Mrs. Jean Douglas, Charlotte, Shirley, Kathy; grandmother, Mrs. Otha Webb. Funeral 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22. Atchley's Chapel. Rev.
