1931

And most of the time as we come up the smooth highway, over the gentle slopes and along the open river valley of Sevier County, the great peaks, Mt. LeConte and Cove Mountain, appear to be constantly be fore us -- dim and smoky, yet prominent, standing out in front of the main range -- lofty and solemn and silent and grand -- the natural front of a most wonderful panorama."

"Parkway Camp, an attractive roadside cabin with lunch counter inside, a filling station outside, and a concrete dam & a swimming pool in the river.

The lunch counter in the cabin is of thick glass placed over a big log, cut out like a trough, with water flowing through it and fish swimming in it, under the glass. An automatic piano operated by water power furnish music. Some fine antlers and horns, some ancient clocks and other relics and ornaments adorn the walls.

1932 Record Resolution

May be found. A big chunk of "pig iron" and some other historic & prehistoric relics are exhibited in the window of Stott Bros. Store at P. F. by Mr. John T. Wynn. And a big hammer, of several hundred weight, may be seen standing like a small monument in the front yard of Mr. Robert Wear's residence on the Walden Creek Road some distance from Pigeon Forge.

No doubt the coming of the railroad to Knox brought rolled iron from Pittsburgh far cheaper than hammered iron could be made at P. F. The iron industry among the foothills of Old Smoky began to wane --- the old time forge was superseded by the big flour mill --- But the old time name of P. F. yet remained.

Land Purchased for New Post Office Building

The Edd Sheperd residence lot corner of Bruce Streeet and Park Road has been purchased by the post office authorities for Sevierville's new post office building. The price paid was $6,200. It is understood engineers and architects are at work preparing plans and specifications. It has not yet been given out what materials will be used in the construction. Sevierville people are hopeful that a considerable portion if not all of it will be built of East Tennessee marble. Sevierville is close to the marble quarries of East Tennessee and the transportation of the stone would not be a costly item. The site chosen for the new building is ideal. The many thousands of visitors will pass right by this building on their way to the mountains.

The Chamber of Commerce, Civic bodies, Clubs, and public spirited citizens of Sevierville should get busy and try to induce Uncle Sam to use East Tennessee marble in the construction of this building.

Mrs. Hannah Beaman Duggan, aged 83 years and 11 days, widow of the late Hon. W. L. Duggan, of East Fork, Sevier County, died Dec. 9, 1937 at the home of her daughter Mrs. U. S. Vineyard, at Riverdale, Knox County.

She was the mother of nine children, the ______ of which died in infancy and two daughters in the early part of 19___. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. R. N. Murphy of Knoxville, Mrs. U. S. Vineyard of Riverdale, Knox County; four sons, Ralph B. Duggan of Sevierville, Claude V. and Orton L. Duggan of Knoxville, and M. Blaine Duggan of Chicago. There are also 35 grandchildren and great-grandchildren living.

Mrs. Duggan's maiden name was Hannah R. Beaman. She was the daughter of William Beaman of Malone, NY. At the age of three, her father moved to Leroy, Minnesota. In 1869 at the age of 1`4 Hannah Beaman came to East Tennessee to attend a private school taught by her uncle Prof. Fernando Beaman of Knoxville. The school was located in the vicinity of Riverdale only a few miles from where she died. It was while attending her uncle's school that she met Wilson Duggan whom she married April 27, 1871. Within a few years after her marriage during which time her husband taught private schools, they went to the old Duggan homestead at East Fork where they resided until the death of her husband after which she spent most of her time with her two daughters.

She served as postmaster at the East Fork post office during the Arthur administration. During her active life she was always ready and willing to administer to the sick.

Funeral services were conducted at the home at East Fork last Sunday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by the Rev. J. Lacy Basham and Rev. W. F. Pitts. Interment was in the family cemetery.

Music was rendered by a quartet composed of G. H. Wynn, Louis Trotter, Charles Franklin, and Mrs. Charles Franklin.

Pallbearers were: Victor V. Allen, Walter Dixon, Clarence Howard, Walter Sharp, A. B. Shields, and W. L. Williams.

Hold Final Service in Evans Chapel on Sunday, Auag. 29, 1937

One final service -- next Sunday, August 29 -- will be held in Evans Chapel near Pittman Center, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park be fore the 67 year old building is torn down.

The meting will be a homecoming and old harp singing to which all are invited. It will start early and last all day.

The clapboard structure erected in 1870 which served its parishioners regularly until a few years ago will be demolished to make way for improvement of newly acquired lands for the park.

Years ago when Pittman Center was a thriving community and before Gatlinburg laid claim to commercial prominence, residents were married in Evans Chapael. Many were buried there. Many a church social was held in the privacy of its giant shade trees.

Old timers many of whom have moved to East Tennessee cities will be given a last opportunity to enjoy the sociability at Evans Chapel which they knew years ago. Howard M. Huskey, Knoxville policeman, heads a committee to invite former parishioners to the final homecoming.

Rev. George Barnett, pastor of Pittman Center School, will be in charge. J. H. Shinpaugh and his Knox County Old Harp Singers will supply music.

No Railroad.

"I'd hate to see the railroad go but the people here haven't given it their cooperation" said H. S. Mantooth in discussing the application to the Interstate Commerce Commission to abandon the line from here to Knoxville.

ditto Perhaps the railroad is not such a vital factor in transportation to Sevierville and Sevier County people as it was when it was constructed 28 years ago.

But if its lines are ever removed from the county, every citizen will feel the effect of it in lower land values. Railroads are not being built today and if this one is removed we may as well say good bye to rail transportation in Sevier County. And along with the rails will go one of the finest arguments in securing Indus try for the county.

Summed up the railroad means more to Sevier County in dollars and cents than we can realize until it is too late, and it is the duty of every citizen to do all in his power to prevent this line from being taken up. "
